Did you rinse the sand prior to putting it in?
What type of filtration do you have on the tank?

if you have a hang on filter with a carbon insert, it will polish the water in a few hours...

I put my sand and rock in and it was very cloudy until the next day. By day three, it was very clear. I say give i ta few days. The carbon is not a bad idea for a few hours but don't leave it in too long from what I am told.

When I set up a 65g and it was super dusty...what I did was use a HOB filter (HOT Magnum), stur up the sand well and within a day, the cloudiness was gone.

A good solution is use chaeto instead of carbon - its texture grabs fine particles well - then just rinse it out every now and then...

i rinsed out the sand pretty good before i put it in the tank.and i let it filter all out for a day.everything cleared up really well.but now on day two if i touch the bottom it stirs up really bad still.i am using a penguin 350 filter and ive also temporarily got a fluval 3 filter in the tank.im just going to stir it up, let it clear up, rinse the filter, repeat.i found that the filters are picking up alot of the dust. maybe i souldve just filtered out the sand a little better.idk.

Thats exactly what I did, and would recommend...
Keep stirring up the sand until you have less dust in the water.
Within a few days you should be fine.

i think that th is process is going to work fine.just be a lot messier and time consuming.i stirred it all up last night bfore i went to bed.in the morning the tank was all clear.rinsed out the filters on both of my filters and showed that they picked up alot of very fine sand.

this may be a stupid question.but does anyone have any good ideas for rinsing out sand really good before putting it in your tank.i made the mistak of not putting enough sand in in the first place.so now i have to add more.but im trying to get out of this dust mess.

I used a 5g bucket. Put the sand in, add fresh water, stir, empty water, repeat. Do this until you're comfortable with how much "dust" you have removed. Then the last 2 times rinse with salt water...
