what are the limits as far as fish go ( in size ) for my tank

its 40x16x12"

General rule of thumb For salt water tanks are 1" per 5 gallons.
So in theory you could put a 5 inch fish, but if you ask me it would be to constricting for a tank that size.

I would say 3 inches would be a good size .
What are you thinking of?
