View Full Version : Clean-Up Crew Group Buy

FishTri
10/28/2007, 11:59 AM
I'll start off the festivities with a minimum $100 order. Could go higher. If anybody else wants to tag along, let me know. If the order gets some momentum, we can talk to the vendor about real "group buy" status.

I've checked out a few sites (Keys Critters, eTropicals, Dr. Mac, etc.) For what I'm looking for, it looks like Reeftopia has the best selection. I'm also flexible enough that I could receive the shipment either at home or at work (Bryn Mawr or Upper Darby).

I know some people just did a group buy coordinated on another forum (think "Wet Simian"). Let us know how it went, what worked, etc.

Post here if you're in.

reeftopia worked well for our group buy, contact them and they will send you all the information you will need. need to know anything else let me know.

I would be interested if there would be a group discount. Looking to spend at least $100. I got my initial cleaner crew from reeftopia and was very happy.

I have no crew left in a 180 so it's likely $50 to $100 here.

Wet simians = waterlogged ancestors?

I am probably in as well. Need to populate a 125g

You can probably count me in too. I can use some more critters in my tank.

FishTri

O.K. Everyone over to the Reeftopia site and start putting together what you'd like. Post it here or send me a PM. I'll start a tally.

One we get an order together we'll figure out what everybody owes. I'll ask everybody to send me a check or paypal. When the money's all in we'll place the order.

Before we place the order we'll also have to work out the pick-up details.

Depending on the discount, etc I want the Total Reef Care Special #3. It is 149 on the site.

Keep me posted. :D Thanks!

I'd like:
200 Astrea
300 Cerith

At Keyscritters it would be 2 Package #6s for $300 and I'd be done.

At Reeftopia i could split the 300 Astrea lot price with someone they'd take 100 of the Astreas at $0.45 ea. ($45) because I'd have to buy the 300 qty to get the right price but only want 200. Anyone want 100 Astrea at $0.45?

At Reeftopia with the split Astreas my order would be $270. Plus a freebee or 2 that Reeftopia throws in at that level :D

FishTri
10/29/2007, 07:52 PM
Rodstar,

I spoke to reeftopia today. Here's how the discounting works.

Over $99.00 free shipping
Some free stuff at $120.00 (e.g. an Orange ricordia polyp)
Over $200.00 10% discount

That's it. So once you get over $200 and the 10% discount level, there's not much benefit to piling on. Looks like we're easily at the $200 level.

So...

1.) Figure out what you need and what it should cost, and post it here.
2.) PM me with a telephone number where you can be reached when the stuff comes in.
3.) In the next couple of days I'll put together a master list, then set up collecting the cash.
4.) If we place the order on a Tuesday it should arrive Thursday. Let me know if you would have a problem picking your stuff up on a Thursday afternoon, or early evening.

ribs
10/29/2007, 08:03 PM
At the 10% off level it would take me to $243 if someone would like the extra 100 Astreas. Poke Poke Nudge Nudge.

bheron
10/29/2007, 08:20 PM
If you go to their lot prices page I think you can get even greater discounts depending on how much you buy.

FishTri
10/29/2007, 08:42 PM
Ribs,

Why do you like the Astreas and Ceriths over the other critters? What about hermits, nerites, emerald crabs, etc.

ribs
10/29/2007, 11:16 PM
Bryan yep! I was using the lot pricing for my tally plus another 10%.

Alan I found hermits ate the snails! Often! It doesn't work for me so I had to decide hermits or snails long ago.....not both.
Maybe a couple of nerites would fit in but feel it'd just be icing on the algae-eating cake :)
I love emeralds!!!!! Just not this time around.
I'm of the feeling now that any bristle or serpent star grows large enough to be suspect in unexplainable things that happen in a tank.
No sandbed in display so no cukes.
500 of these type of snails is not that much in a 180 tank.
All above just my opinion mileage varies.

bheron
10/30/2007, 05:11 AM
Gotcha! Thanks.

You know, I've been reading alot about people ditching the hermits. I seem to agree and have attributed my decrease in cleaner crew (from 2 yrs ago) to either the hermits or just the warmer temps in the summer.

I think I'll look at something with just all snails.

Ribs - count me in for those extra 100 Turbo Astreas.

Ordering today or next tues?

mkbtank
10/30/2007, 05:41 AM
I've seen the hermit/snail attack in my 180, and it's never good for the snails. I have to agree.

I may be in on this order as well.

rodstar
10/30/2007, 07:35 AM
That is why I am going with the Total Reef Care Package #3. The only hermit crabs in there are the scarlet ones and I have found that they do not bother my snails. It was the blue legs and others that would gang up on the snails. I received more than a couple phone calls from my wife while I was on the road giving me play-by-play of the hermits attacking a snail and then fighting for the shell and carcass.

And this package also comes with emerald crabs which I love. Unfortunately, they disappear in my rock work and I never can find them...

us2000ua
10/30/2007, 07:57 AM
Good idea to get Trochus snails, they are like Astreas, but can right themselves. I'm going to order some Astreas and Ceriths.

FishTri
10/30/2007, 09:26 AM
Thanks all for the comments on hermits, stars, etc.

Ribs, I can confirm that the stars are carnivores. I recently lost some chromis and peppermint shrimp. Based on the bulges in the star's middle, there was no question what happened to them... He's been banished to the 'fuge for now.

Bryan, the order definitely won't be going in today. If I get my act together, maybe we can do it next week.

Do people have the same problem with crabs (killing other stuff) as with hermits? Specifically, the Emerald's?

rodstar
10/30/2007, 09:35 AM
Not me... My emerald hasn't eaten anything besides detritus... not even my outbreak of bubble algae.

In fact, I haven't seen my one emerald in about a week (in my small 14g Biocube) so I am not even sure if he is still around...

us2000ua
10/30/2007, 09:46 AM
I agree on crabs. No crabs. I saw them attack snails. I have one sally light foot in ma tank. I bought it long time ago, it was so cool looking with red eyes. Now its 5" size (legs) and he is trying to catch any fish, that swims by.

It looks like Keyscritters have better prices. If some of you remember I organized one group buy from them. Excellent costumer service. Half of my snails arrived dead for some reason and they sent me replacement at no cost at all. As I remember I wasn't alone with dead snails and they sent new one to everyone.

bheron
10/30/2007, 10:11 AM
Sounds good.

PS - Keyscritters does have some great prices, without any discounts, but it looks like its mostly blue legs, astreas, and ceriths. They throw in some nice freebies and then offer a discount once you get to $500.

I was looking at the count of Turbos and Ceriths we have and we're into their lot pricing. Didnt realize that.

Turbos go down to 0.42 each if we hit 600 count. so I'll take another 100 Turbos to give me 200 and that should put us over 600. Then add on the 10% discount and it should cost us 0.38 each, right?

Also update my order with 75 ceriths, 4 emerald crabs, and 1 cucumber.

since you run without overflows, or a sump, they may work for you. They arent as big as a sea hare, but they do a good job for their size. The problem is they seem to be prone to riding pipes, and getting lost in sumps.

Your water quality needs to be nop notch to keep them. They are in no way a fix to hair algae. They might have a tiny bit as a meal but mexican turbos are worth the money not the lettuce nudis.

Can someone PM me or let me know the details on how payments are going to work? Are we having one person buy and paying them back or all paying online and just telling them we are part of the group buy.

I think there are a couple people in the DRC interested in getting in on this if I were to bring there orders down here so they wouldn't have to drive as far. Together the two clubs orders could bring prices down even further.

FishTri
11/05/2007, 08:50 AM
Gordonius,

Reeftopia wants one payment from one person, so all of the cash needs to be collected before the order is placed.

I'm working on everybody's amounts now. Paypal is probably the easiest, so If you're not set up for Paypal, now might be a good time to get a head start... People that are local could stop by with cash if that works.

I'm a little behind the curve due to a little plumbing adventure this weekend, but I'm working on getting everybody's numbers together.

As far as the two clubs getting together, that's o.k. if they want to post on this thread. (Better do it quickly) At this point, I think we are pretty deep into the discount so its not that much of an advantage. Another option is to just do a local group buy for DRC.

Back to the spreadsheet...

FishTri

O.K. folks. Here's an update. We've hit a few snags. Nothing major, but the odds that I can get it all together for shipment this week are diminishing quickly.

I sent reeftopia a copy of their spreadsheet where I had added pricing, but they want their spreadsheet unaltered, so I'll re-do it (my fault, not theirs). But she also pointed out that some of what we are ordering has to be purchased from the website in the specific quantities they offer.

For example, we are at (174) Micro Blue Hermits. Looking at the "Lot Prices" page I assumed if we were over (150) we could buy them at $.22 (and then 10% off). Well, she told me there's an "out of stock" note on that quantity, so apparently they are not offering them at that price. On the "Crabs and Hermits" page they are "$24 per 100 lot". Anyone want to step up for another (26) Micro Blue Hermits?

So I've got to go through the quantities that everybody has requested and see if they jive with the "lot" pricing. By the way, group orders have to be placed on Tuesday for Thursday delivery to give them time to get it all together.

Hopefully no one will shoot me for this, but it looks like I have to put off ordering until next week. Besides, I really need to allow enough time for coordinating payment, and 24 hours is not realistic. This order is over $1,000. If I put that on my credit card without collecting first, there's someone else who would shoot me.

Be right there, Honey...

O.K. Need some HTML help. If I copy and paste from an Excel sheet into the Reply box, the numbers go in, but the formatting is all screwed up.

I can export a web page from the Excel spreadsheet to a file called "Table.htm" which opens up very nicely in a browser with great formatting of the columns of numbers.

How do I get the "Table.htm" document into the Reply box so I can share it in this thread??

bheron
11/08/2007, 10:04 PM
Hey Alan, not sure if you can or not. The reply box here picks up some HTML tags. But usually the MS Excel code is pretty full of alot of junk HTML. Might be best to take a screenshot of it and post it as an image? Not sure how big it is. To do that:

1) Make it all fit on one screen.
2) press CTRL+PRNT SCRN buttons to copy it to your clipboard
3) Open up MS Paint
4) Go to Edit and Paste
5) Save it as any normal graphics file then post on here.

We still have a little more work to do as a group.

The quantities need to be "balanced" to meet the lot sizes. Some items need to be ordered in lots of 12, 24, 100, etc. If the link method above works for posting the large table with pricing, I'll start putting together a list of what needs to "balanced"

Some people may order more to bring us up to a round number. In other cases we may want to reduce quantities to bring us down to a round number.

That will be tomorrow's project...

I will also put together a PM I can send to everybody with payment instructions and directions for pickup.

Time to balance:

SNAIL, ASTRAE
We are at 803 and need to order in multiple of 600 to buy at $.42 each. We have to come up with 397 or lose 203. As an alternate, we could buy an additional 300 lot at $.45 each, then average the prices (please shoot me...) We would only need 97 more to do that...

SNAIL. CERITH
We are at 557 and need 43 more to get to multiple of 600.

The rest of the items were small enough that I just adjusted my own quantities enough to even them out. Nothing major.

If we can figure these two items out, we can start collecting money!

Well, I'm off to the 5th grade social. Can't think of a better way to spend a Friday night (please shoot me with something in a larger caliber...)

Seamac2, Cash is King. Thanks for stopping by. And we've got seven people paid by paypal so we're over half way there. I've updated the link above to show payments made.

Thanks for thinking about the fees, but please don't send more than what shows on the table. I don't believe there are any fees for these types of transactions.

Here's the deal. With my basic PayPal account I can "Receive payments funded by PayPal Balance, PayPal Instant Transfer or PayPal eCheck" for free. (If you use a credit card, then there are some stiff percentages they take. More importantly, they only allow a small handful of credit card transactions per year with a basic account. If even only a few of this group order was paid by credit card it would wipe me out for the year.)

For those of you who have already paid more than owed, I'll give you cash when you come to pick up. Please remind me.

marc price, I added your scarlet hermits. Nerites must be ordered in multiples of six. I've reduced my order by four and added four for you.

If anybody has more ceriths than they really want, marc price I believe might be interested.

Fraggin was also looking for 50 CERITH and 10 Nassarius if anyone wants to cut a deal on the side.

And with that, I think the store is closed.

Group Order Table (http://mysite.verizon.net/rhodefamily/Table4.htm)

We're doing pretty well with the money. Just a few left to go. If PayPal is impossible for you, I've arranged at work for them to accept a credit card for me (it may add a buck or two to cover the percentage charged by the credit card company). Give me a call and I'll give you the number to call.

Emc2 realized that pickup was going to be a hassle. She paid even though she knew she wasn't going to pick up - didn't want to screw up the numbers. Very considerate. I crossed off a couple of items, and redistributed a few to some people who were short.

51 Astreas
24 Nass.

The ricordia has no impact on the order so no worries there. The astreas and nass do.

This is all assuming Alan hasn't put in the order...

Bryan,

If we add 50 Nassarius, plus my 4, we can split 54 for 27 each.

Ribs?

If you happen to re-add the nassarious to round up the order I'd take about 10 of those to alleviate things. If not, no biggie.

Angel has 51 astrea's that he's trying to unload. Ribs said he would take 25 of them, but he already stepped up for 25 earlier.

So Ribs would probably be happy if we could find another home for the 51 astreas. Otherwise, Ribs will take 25, leaving 26 left to find a home for.

Let me get the order in, and a confirmation back on the pricing. I figure if there's any settling up, it shouldn't be that much and we can take care of it on Thursday.

By the way, I spoke to reeftopia today, and they say I should get the shipment sometime around 10:30am. I figure I'll be home by noon if people want to do an early pickup during the day.

Krikor, you are at 120 astreas

Jay4Robin, you are at 55 astreas

Aquanut6, you're down to zero. Enjoy your trip to the Left coast!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The order is in. Grand total was $1,230 before the 10% discount. Not bad for DVRC's first group order.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday. As soon as the shipment arrives I will post it here. I'm figuring pickups can start around noon.

Everyone should have my address and phone numbers sent by PM a couple days ago. If not, PM me and I will get it to you.

I expect everything should be packed separately. Just to be safe, you might want to bring an extra container. Also, some sort of insulated cooler might be a good idea to keep your critters comfortable for the ride home.

There will be a little accounting to do. Shrimp were a little less expensive at $2.00 each instead of $2.50. Astreas averaged out to $.43 instead of $.42. Nothing major, but I'll have change on Thursday to settle up.

For your future orders, there's no need to round out quantities. As long as you go over the price point you get that discount. You can order as many/few as you want/need.

They'll also bag them individually for you if you provide them with the spreadsheet for the breakdown (they supply the spreadsheet).

Phyl and Ribs, they are shipping tomorrow for Thursday delivery. We used their spreadsheet, so they should come pre-packed with the correct splits.

Once we receive the shipment and the whole process is complete, we can do a little post-mortem to share the things we've learned. It may come in handy for Ribs who has volunteered to organize the next group order. ;)

Reeftopia has shipped. FedEx should deliver by 10:30AM tomorrow (Thursday) morning. I should be home before noon.

Give me a call and come on over to pick up your critters!

Everything should be packed in the quantities you ordered, but just in case, you might want to bring a container. I like to bring an Igloo cooler too, just to keep 'em toasty for the ride home.

Everyone should have my address and cell phone. If you'd like specific directions, send me a PM and let me know which direction you're coming from.

See you all tomorrow.

What is the acclimation procedure? as usual or they ship them dry and you just dump them after floating for temperature?

not dry, i wouldnt go as far as saying drip acclimate, but take your time.

I just dump them in after temp acclimating for a few minutes!

MinibowMatt

I would be surprised to see that they are shipped wet.. thats a lot of extra weight that isnt needed.
Like Stix mentioned, a float to temp, and cut and drop.

Stuff's here. Come on over!

I printed out acclimation instructions from the web site, and I have a copy for everybody. Looks pretty standard. Float to temp, Add water slowly, double the volume, dump some out, add more water, etc.

Alan,

Thanks again for leading the effort for this group order. :)

I thought it might be helpful for each of us to post outcomes (easy for me since I ordered small quantities):

Ordered: 24 nassarius, 18 astrea, 12 cerith
Received: 27 nassarius, 18 astrea, 12 cerith

No empty shells and so far no casualties. The nassarius and astreas are already getting to work, but the ceriths are a bit sluggish. Hopefully they'll pick it up! :D

One of my queen conch's is DOA.

My dry packed astrea's are comming around, but may have some casualties.

Nerites, Nassarius, Emeralds, Mini-bluelegs all up and around.

50% of the astrea's are on the glass and cruising. The balance look a little sluggish on the sand.

98% of the ceriths are just laying there. Only one or two on the glass.

Queen Conchs showing signs of life, but relatively sedate. Krikor, hang in there. Yours might come around in a day or so.

Last pickup was half an hour ago.

I'm exhausted... :hmm3:

well my few creiths are still where i put them but all other critters are busy exploring. now if the nerite's can just postpone that hardwood floor expedition they were training for in the acclimation container.
thanks again alan

btw, i have an encrusting porites which has a few small projections that i can break off for your foam/shell background if you want 'em. looks just like mike palettas purple porites only it's more a brown-burgandy/small white polyps ( www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=2448 ). i'll be in the city sunday but if kirkor and you are going to the meeting i can drop it off at kirkor's house.
now that i think about it pavona maldivensis ( www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=2544 ), would be cool growing there too but i'm sure you have your own ideas... hint hint think deep water acros. your set-up has lots of potential, good luck with it.

My stock looks pretty good. I dripped acclimated them while floating instead. My queen conch was alive but didn't look great this morning. I am hoping it comes around. For all the others, I may have 1-2 dead turbos, I think all my ceriths are alive. The nudibranch is doing great. I had 24 turbos, 12 ceriths, 1 conch and 1 nudibranch. Some snails are on the same places on the rocks but I know they are alive because they were suctioned on there. I think most of them will make it. Thanks again Alan!

Jay4Robin

All I did was float for 20minutes then let them free. All alive today. I did not get ceriths though.

Stixbaraca
11/16/2007, 07:09 PM
Do you think retailers put empty shells in the order or do you think they die in transit? I would think that when your loading say 500 ceriths into bags some empties are going to get in there by accident.

jjakes24
11/16/2007, 07:26 PM
My ceriths are all fine. I only got 12 but they are all moving and doing well. The astreas are all over the place too. The only one I am worried about is the conch. It hasn't moved but when I held it to the glass, its eyes came out and moved so it is definitly alive, it just wouldn't grab on the glass to hold itself. I'll be watching it closely the next couple of days.

rotleybutii
11/16/2007, 10:14 PM
All my snails are fine. Floated them for 20 minutes added water and off they went. All my snails were up and moving last night before I went to bed. Alan if your going to the meeting I'll give you one of my frags for handling this mess and for letting me come over at 9:30 last night.

FishTri
11/16/2007, 11:03 PM
rotleybutii, I'll stay up 'till midnight for frags!

jjakes24, I think conchs are slow-moving and will stay burrowing in the sand. My two have only moved a couple of inches from where I put them in, but I think they'll survive at this point.

Stix, I don't know about empty shells, but I did get a little bonus surprise. The one cerith that I thought was really active...was a hermit in a cerith shell!

As for the rest of the ceriths, they were slow to the dance but a lot of them are up and partying. Still have 30% of my 69 ceriths on the sand, so it may be another day or two before we do the body count, but I'm hoping most of them will come around.

Ribs, you had the big order for ceriths, how are you making out?

Almost every astrea are staking their territory. Nice to have a cleanup crew in the tank. What types of algae are attached? I see 2 distinct types....the skinny whiteish stringy stuff and the much fatter green strings.
At this point I consider the ceriths lackadaisical (sp). Reserving judgement for another day or so.......there is occasional movement in the section I've placed them. A very few have wandered farther than the astreas.

Nice floyd cracks :)
