"The use of varying light intensities over the day has important implications. The consistantly " clear" days over our aquariums is unnatural. Corals exposed to artifically intense and unrelenting light may begin to experience oxygen toxicity from the oversaturationof the coral tissuewith photosynthetic oxygen. in addition, corals that are exposed to sudden and dramatic increases in lightcan have their zooxanthellae produce more oxygen than can be consumed. These conditions can arise fromt he use of new bulbs, more powerful lights, the sudden use of ozone or large amounts of granular activated carbon (GAC), prolongedoverly intense light, or sudden placement of species into new conditions without proper acclimation.

The production of enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and peroxidase may literally destroy coral tissue in an attempt to cope with the free oxygen radicals and peroxidesendangering the coral. The enzymes secreted by the algae and the coral in an attempt to control these radicals can be everwhelmed, and light shock or oxygen toxicity is the result. Corals may then begin " bleaching" or expelling their zooxanthellae. It is strongly recommended that gental acclimation of corals to new lighting systems be conducted, and the prolonged periods of very intense light be tempered with some "breaks" of intensity throughout the day."
