I think our friends at keys critters snuck this in with the hermits or ceriths? I think it's a whelk since there are no nubs on the shell. Melev's site says they eat snails and clams. He's probably got to go.

he's been banished to the chamber of my backpack, not sure if that's a good idea or not, but hopefully he'll do some cleaning

Hard to say, hopefully he doesn’t clog anything. Some do get big…
