It looks similar to a chalice... is that what it could be? It has grown down over the edges of the plug.

I'm not an expert at all, but I dont think it a chalice. What kind of lighting do you have him unde? I dont think you would be able to witness any growth on a chalice, unless youv'e had it for a long while.

some variety of 'chalice". It looks most like Echinophyllia (Ive got an Echinophyllia aspera in my tank that looks almost identical).

I have had it under T5HO for about 4 months now. It was at about the edge of the frag plug when I got it, now it has grown down around the plug.

Hormigaquatica, it does look like Echinophyllia aspera. I do notice some decent-sized sweepers coming out at night.. is that a trait of these corals?

Ive never seen my E. aspera do it, but Ive got another Echinophyllia that does send out long sweepers on occasion. It doesnt happen every night, and theyre spaced pretty sporadically across the coral, but theyre certainly present, and can get quite long (Ive seen tentacles on mine around 6" long).
