Well here goes my 37g Oceanic thread!

I went and picked up the tank today. I found the tank on craigslist and was shocked to find such a good deal. The add said nice 37g oceanic tank and stand $250. Well I shot them an email saying I will take it for $200 and they said come get it. I was very happy cause I have been looking for this tank. I was told that the tank was purchased for $589 and that it was used for 3 months.

I went and got the tank today and the back was painted blue, but the tank and stand were in MINT condition.

The tank is going to be a mixed tank, but set up for sps. Tomorrow at our local reef club meeting we are drilling the back. I am doing a 1 1/2" drain to a 10g sump which I will be building tomorrow. The return will be a mag 7 split off to two 3/4" returns and lock line.

The skimmer I will be using is a Aqua C Urchin in sump and for flow in the tank I will have the 2 returns and a tunze nano 6025.

Pics coming.

Well good and bad news. Good news is the the paint looked great and dried good.

Bad news is we busted the tank drilling it today at the meeting. :(

Dont know what happened, but after the hole was drilled it cracked from top to bottom.

Now my tank is a 18g rubbermaid! LOL!

I am going to see what a glass company in my area says about cutting me a piece.

Bummer...

Im sorry to here that, and im sure you alreay though of this, but just incase you didnt....

Have the glass drilled by the glass shop, then install it on the tank. you dont want to try to drill it again, and then have it break again.

Anyways, Im looking forwards to your build though!

03/18/2007, 01:39 PM
Thanks you all, I appreciate it. I for sure am going to get the glass shop to drill the holes. No more tank drilling for me. i did everything right..i think...and it still cracked.

I am starting on the sump today so hopefully some pics soon. Stay tuned! :)

i am also in search of a sump that would fit in the stand...let me know what u have up your sleeve. Are you building it yourself, or having it made? I really wanted to go acrylic but its a little expensive.

RevHtree
03/18/2007, 03:15 PM
Well actually I just took out a piece of the back of the oceanic stand to fit a 10g in there.

Also I will let you know about the glass tomorrow.

Well ordered the glass today. Found a place that would ge it to me for $33. So not to bad considering what all th other places wanted.

On a side note, I am going to try and drill it again! This time out of the tank.

It comes in Wednesday.

03/19/2007, 07:22 PM
I would try to get your LFS to drill it for you because they are usually alot more experienced with drilling tanks as long as they are a reputable store. Good luck drilling it again!! Just remember, don't force it and go slow.

RevHtree
03/21/2007, 09:35 PM
Well update.

Got the glass today and decided to try and drill it by myself.............

I drilled it and all is well! :) I have also already painted it and went to silicone it and noticed I got BLACK silicone instead of clear! AGG!

Oh well, I will silicone tomorrow and then I will be out of town till Sunday. I will fill it up Sunday and let it sit for a day and check for leaks.

If there is no leaks then I will have the tank set up pretty quick!

hey great news!!!....

RevHtree
03/21/2007, 10:34 PM
Ok a little dilemma here.

I drilled the hole which came out to be like 2 3/8" and the bulkhead needs a
2 5/8" hole to fit. I do not want to bore it out any more and take the chance on breaking the glass.

What other bulkhead can I use instead. It a 1 1/2" BH, but I am afraid the hole is to big fo a 1". Do they make a slightly bigger BH that 1" and under 1 1/2"?

RevHtree
03/21/2007, 10:36 PM
If I use a 1" BH I would have like 1/4: on each side I think. Would a 1" BH cover it?

Marinedepot says that for a 1" BH you need a 1 7/8 hole, I have a 2 3/8" hole.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=4013&N=2004+113786

Says a 1.5" BH needs a 2 3/8" hole ??

I think the bulkheads you are referring to are "heavy duty" bulkheads.

raastamon
03/21/2007, 11:11 PM
for 2 3/8" hole, you can use a 1 1/2 bulkhead...

RevHtree
03/22/2007, 09:32 AM
Thanks you both! I went ahead an ordered the 1 1/2" from Dr's.

Thanks again.

Good luck with everything Rev. I hope the crack will be the only problem you run into from here on out. I can't wait to see it up and running. Have you decided on lighting yet??

RevHtree
03/22/2007, 03:34 PM
Thanks you too! I have decided on lighting! I got it in the mail yesterday.

I got a 250w PFO Pendant with a Blueline E-Ballast! ;)

It's a slick set up.

RevHtree

Hamilton 20k bulb :)

Well got the tank sealed up and I will let it cure until Sunday/Monday and then fill it up for a night and see what happens.

It's not pretty, but its sealed.....I think! LOL!

Dont feel too bad about a crack I drilled my 55 and found out the hard way it was tempered. How did you remove the brace? I want to remove mine to repair it. By the way I'm bobby on LR.

joedirt54
03/27/2007, 12:50 AM
I drilled the back of my 30 cube five times with a $6 diamond hole saw from HK, china and a dewalt cordless. A little water and a plumbers puddy dam and all was good.

RevHtree
03/27/2007, 06:28 AM
Hey Bobby! Actually the trim had seems in the corner and it was just siliconed in. So I removed the silicone and popped the trim right off.

37 is a great tank, i love mine, bummer on the break, the oceanics cost an arm and a leg, infact i just bought an aga 75 for less than my oceanic 37...anyway cant wait to see what u do with the tank

RevHtree
03/30/2007, 09:28 AM
OK got the BH in leak tested and we are good to go. I finished the 10g sump, not pretty, but finished. So today I will plumb and have the tank set up by tonight hopefully. I will add the stock from my current tank to have an instant reef! :)

Stay tuned.

GrandeGixxer
03/30/2007, 05:25 PM
If you had to cut the stand to fit the 10g in, why didn't you go with something bigger like a 20g? 10g is pretty small for a sump/refugium. I did a 20g for my 30g display and had to cut the stand as well.

raastamon
04/04/2007, 02:35 AM
grandegixxer,

how did you cut the stand....can you post a pic of what you did? Im still trying to figure out what im going to do with the sump options.

thanks,

RevHtree
04/06/2007, 09:49 AM
Hey sorry for the long delay. This tank took a lot out of me last week. LOL!

I will get some pics tonight. I got it up and running! ;)

Oh the back of my stand had to braces. I knocked one out and detached the other from the bottom enough to get the 10g in. I didnt do a 15g caue I could not find one anywhere. As soon as I do I will replace the 10g.

I have the stand fixed in the back where i can easily unscrew a few screws and detach the brace. There is really no oad at all on them so I can do this while the tank is still there.

GrandeGixxer
04/07/2007, 09:25 AM

So far so good on both! :)

The aqua c is pulling some good gunk and the nano stream moves a lot of water. It moves the sand bed quite a bit so I aim it up a little. i was going to get 2, but i think one will be plenty

Same question and a bump for the info on the return. I have a 30g Oceanic that I want to drill and set up like yours possibly, just worried about noise from the return/overflow elbow.
