I'll throw in some useful info just to be on the up and up.

My heater died yesterday. It was a 250W ebo jager that I have had for about 3 years. I have read that they can leak and fail, but I never had a problem with mine. Well, it finially bit the dust. I took it out of the sump and there was a lot of water droplets on the inside. Im probably lucky the thing didnt fry or shock the tank. Needless to say, I wont be buying another ebo jager heater.

So now, I need to find a suitable replacement heater. Fully sumbersible.

Alright, something serious! What kind of heater should you buy? Hmm....I have a titanium Won Brothers heater that works pretty well. Something cheaper and works good are the Visitherm stealth heaters. I have one on the nano and it seems to be doing fine. It's plastic so there's nothing to break.

It's information available to all members on RC. Just click on the # of posts next to the thread. You can see who all posted in it and how many times. I'm surprised you didn't know, you're the click-happy guy! :D

wow looks like i missed out on a fun day :( i just got home maybe 30 min ago from finishing up a project. :(
about the heater, i got this one when i got my ranco and its been working fine. seems like its pretty heavy duty, almost like a small lead pipe.... ok maybe not that much haha. You have to have a controller to use it though, it doesnt have the control built into it.

Thanks for extending the offer Chris! I would like to come out to the swap to check things out. Not to mention all the cool fish stores you guys have near you! But as you already know, my tank is almost locked down so I'm not sure if I would want anything else to put in my tank. I'm counting! You're supposed to beat Kurt! :D If you guys get it, who gets the lemonade? It's the most "desirable" one of the bunch.

30mini
03/14/2007, 08:04 AM
Well, the lemonade will have to go to whomever gets the pack together and has it shipped to them... and everyone will get a frag when it comes time to frag it of course!

Jeff, we are only 3hrs from the point! Make it a week, and go up there first, then hit up KI and the Beach, then the swap!!

30mini
03/14/2007, 08:56 AM
Yea, and so are RPE's... and so are the LOTR's that I have... they will eventually come down in price once they are traded/sold enough!

slovan
03/14/2007, 08:57 AM
No they're not, you can find them anywhere from $35-$50. I think $35 is the going rate these days. They're becoming more popular through propagation. Awhile back, I bought 3 polyps but only 1 survived. Now the one is big and healthy and there's a new baby one that sprouted last week so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can grow them out.

30mini
03/14/2007, 08:58 AM
They are somewhat of a lower light paly... if you have a nice shaded area to put them in, I'd throw them under there for a while and see how they do! If they start to reach for the light, pull them out further till they stop reaching!

Fusch13
03/14/2007, 08:59 AM

slovan

That's the way I understood it. I don't think there's a pump or anything. It also looks like they're for planted aquariums instead of reefs. Changing hobbies on us?

Fusch13
03/14/2007, 10:05 AM
there are three, one is for planted the other two, say it can be used on fresh or saltwater...and i read article of a guy using two of these on his 92 gallon reef, so thought id ask if anyone knew about them

30mini

They say that they can be used with mangroves... so, they can be used w/salt water apps. but I think they are mainly geared towards the planted tank!

Can I look, too? Ha! That's a beautiful coral. I would buy only if it's been in a reef tank for at least 6 months. Wild colonies are such a gamble. I bought a few once and they browned out. When the color returned, it was no where near the picture. Nice and healthy but I've read you can get them to hold the color once in awhile.

slovan
03/15/2007, 07:41 AM
It's that time of the year with erratic temperature changes so I can see how she can get sick. Just like here, Tuesday was over 75 degrees and this morning is 32 degrees. Plus if she teaches, she comes in contact with a lot of different kids that could have something.

You guys are hilarious! I'm going to continue changing my avatar until I can find something all of you will like!

Hey Ryan, I am going to get a hold of the vendor for the group buy to see if they have been ordered yet. Last I knew, he had 5 for sure and another person was ready to order. I think he said he was going to order it at 5 anyway so we'll see. Once I get it, it'll probably be another week before I get everything changed out. I want to make sure the basics such as heater and lights working on the new program before I give you the LH.

slovan
03/15/2007, 09:26 AM
Yeah, your calcium is way out of balance to your alkalinity. Just add a little bit more everyday and it'll get there.

slovan
03/15/2007, 09:28 AM
Or you could add some kind of calcium booster aside from using your two-part. I can't remember what kind Jeff uses but maybe he can chime in, his parameters are usually in check using whatever it is.

30mini
03/15/2007, 09:29 AM
yea, I'm gonna add like 1/4 of it everyday, and keep testing and just see what it comes out to be!

Fusch13
03/15/2007, 11:16 AM
subway is always open man!

Kurt03
03/15/2007, 11:19 AM
when i need to adjust my alk or calc i use the calculator to find out how much i need to add, then add that amount to a 2 liter. Then fill the 2 liter the rest of the way up with rodi. Then i just use a air line to drip it slowly in or pour a little in every now and then. The more that is being added the more time in between additions, or a slower drip.
If your adding alk and calc and your numbers arent moving check your magnesium.

"Or you could add some kind of calcium booster aside from using your two-part."
Im guessing he uses something like dow flake? Right now im using prestone driveway heat ice melter :) its the same thing as dow flake and is pure calcium chloride. I think it was like 8$ for 5lbs of it? And this will make a TON of homemade 2part.

30mini

It was just a bad joke. It was really quiet in here this a.m. and reminded me of a Subway commercial. It was something along the lines of it being late at night and dark outside. All you could hear was crickets but Subway was still open! :D

slovan
03/15/2007, 02:08 PM
Nope, just busy at meetings and such. What's going on man? Tank doing well? How's the CS skimmer holding up with the meshmod? Is it still overflowing on you?

Kurt03
03/15/2007, 02:28 PM
i lowered the water level and it seems ok now. Hasnt overflowed and pulled more, darker skim then it did before. I just cleaned the cup last night and there was more skim in there and it was darker then before. I should have taken pics of a couple weeks of skim before modded and after. opps :(

Also i dont think its slowing down on its skimming as the riser gets coated. That was the main problem before. And i mean really, who wants to clean there skimmer every 3-4 days. I do clean usually once a week though.

tanks are doing pretty good. I need to make some filler rock for the 150 i think. I bought around 100lbs of live rock and put it in there. Im going to take all the smaller pieces and put them in the sump. Then put the filler rock that i make on the bottom and the better live rock on the top. Thats the plan anyways. I have a couple large rocks that i made but dont know how much i like them. Been so busy with school the past month or so havent gotten much done. Halides are all mounted in reflectors now though. after i start work im buying bulbs and a 250 ballast to replace the one 175.

slovan
03/15/2007, 02:45 PM
Did you say you have 400W on the outside?

Kurt03
03/15/2007, 02:51 PM
400 in the middle. 250 and a 175 on either side. (i got the 250 and 175 with the tank) so im going to replace the 175 with a 250.

slovan
03/15/2007, 03:09 PM
Oh wow, so you have quite a variety! :D It's better to be consistent. I have 400watters on the outside and a 250 in the middle. You can see the difference in it. You might be better off to go with all 250w for a seamless transition across your tank.

Kurt03
03/15/2007, 04:21 PM
yea, for some reason the guy i bought the tank from had a 250 and a 175 lol. Thats not all, on the left he had a blueline or something 14k bulb that is really blue and on the 175 on the right he had a 55k ebay bulb. it looked interesting :)

He gave me an extra bulb or 2 and one was a 175 ushio 10k :D so ive been running that on the right and the super blue blueline on the left, with the 400w coralvue 10k in the middle  . When i bought the 400w i got 2 of those 10k bulbs, and a xm20k. Of course somehow the xm bulb got broken :(

ive been thinking about 250watters on the outside and the 400 in the middle, or all 3 250's.
250s will give me good growth wont it? i dont know much about halides yet, but im planning on going with xm 20ks and no actinics yet.

slovan
03/15/2007, 04:39 PM
How tall is your 150? 24"? If so, I think you would be okay with a different bulb aside from the XM 20K. The 400W SE does really well but the 250w is more dim and blue. Do you plan on having any actinics? I've heard good things about the Coralvue Reeflux 10K & 12K in the 250W SE flavor. Might want to read into it a little more. Lots of choices out there! :)

Kurt03
03/15/2007, 05:13 PM
i want actinics eventually but wont have them right away. I would like to get away without them for a while, but will prob get them eventually. Yup, i have a ton to of reading to do i guess :)

Kurt03
03/15/2007, 05:15 PM
yea its around 25" tall i think

slovan
03/15/2007, 06:12 PM
I haven't seen any results as far as testing goes on the Reeflux 10K or 12K in the 250W SE but I'm assuming they're pretty decent. Seems to be pretty popular. If I was to gamble, I would go with the Reeflux 12K if you're not going to use any actinic supplementation for awhile.

I think Jeff is going with the 10K when he gets his tank going but he's going to supplement with T5's. Maybe he's read more than I have so he'll have to chime in and let us know what he has read so far.

Sanjay just released the reeflux 12K results. The bulbs suck. I expected that. Looks like Im sticking with the 10k's. The 10K's are supposed to have a hint of blue anyway, so no need to worry about any "yellow" problems.

250W 12K par on icecap = 51.1
250W 10K par on icecap = 86

Wow, the results are really disappointing. The Hamilton 14K's will outperform the RF12K on the same ballast. IME, I thought they were a little on the dim side when I had the Hammies running. The RF10K isn't much better. I think I would look elsewhere for bulbs.

I would look elsewhere for ballasts! Electronic ballasts SUCK!!! Get a magnetic or a PFO and you'll be fine!

One thing they don't suck is energy compared to the other types of ballasts. I think your bulbs would last longer as well since you're really not overdriving the bulb like you would on an HQI ballast. For example, which bulb do you think would last longer? An XM 10K SE bulb on a PFO HQI ballast using 374W or an XM 10K SE bulb on an Ice Cap e-ballast using 256W?

Granted that the PFO puts out a ton of par compared to the e-ballast but I think it comes down to what you're after. For me, I look at operating cost. It's going to cost me more to run the HQI setup due to increased energy consumption and the potential for a shorter bulb life.

The par is 182 on the PFO compared to 115 on the Ice Cap. How much par does the corals need to grow optimally? Is 115 enough? Will a par of 182 be too much and some of it will go unused? Who knows...I wish someone did.

I'm just throwing a different perspective out there aside from flat out performance. Just something to consider. After all, lighting is only part of the puzzle. I bet good skimming and waterflow can make up for some shortfall that you may have in lighting. Should I run and take cover now? :D

No need to take cover...
First off, running an XM 10K on a PFO ballast could potentially allow the bulb to last longer. Why? Well, your using the starter that comes with the ballast to start HQI bulbs, which sends a better pulse to the light and will lengthen the bulbs life b/c of not using the internal starter that is in the SE bulbs. Yes, you are running less wattage w/electronics, but would you want to replace your bubls once a year, or once every year and a half? They would pay for themselves after you only buy one replacement in 18 months.

I agree that a good skimmer and water flow will contribute to growth in a coral, but w/o the lighting, the growth will be slower than that of higher lighting. Granted, if you ran your icecap driven bulb for 12-14 hrs. a day, and you ran the PFO driven bulb for 8-10 hrs a day, I bet you would see the same kind of growth from the coral in both tanks b/c of PAR ratings given off from the bulb throughout the day.

I'll get off my soap box now

i agree with you sone :) do they really overdrive them that much? thats a ton over.

chris, whys Baggerhog hated so much?

Chris, did you see there was another lighthouse controller up for sale for 200 shipped, baggerhog i think picked it up

I saw that as well. He never mentioned which version of the controller he has. Plus I didn't see anything about it coming with probes. Still, $200 is a good deal if it's the newest AQS-4 version.

Kurt, I'm not sure as to the exact reasons, but he is basically a shiite starter and will not allow anyone to give any statement about the club w/o him getting the "last word" and his is "always right" but there is probably other underlying reasons that I don't know about.

Going by the highest numbers and people opions wont get anyone anywhere. People that have success can give their stats, but that doesnt always mean thats the way to go. Even majority opinons or one expert writing a paper dont mean thats the right way to go. I think people get caught up on par readings, skimmer perfomance, flow methods, etc. and go down a path with blinders on.

I think if a person has those blinders on and follow working methods, their tank can run well and have good results. However, that doesnt mean that another method is wrong or less effective.

Something could come along one day that changes the hobby and flips it around 180. What if that something focused on something else besides high par or something else besides tons of bubbles in a acrylic tube to clean water? It would probably be shot down instantly and thats unfortunate.

Same with the Ice Cap ballast. I'm running the 250W e-ballast to drive my Phoenix 14K DE bulb. Here's what Ice Cap says about the ballast. Of course, it could be all marketing.

Sone, that is all marketing. You can run any ballast up to 30 feet away from the bulb, you just need larger wiring going from the bulb to the ballast. The larger the wiring, the further a current can go b/c of less resistance.
When you turn your bulbs on, do you hear them firing? If you do, that's the internal starter on the bulb itself. If not, then the ice-caps are good in firing the bulbs. Firing bulbs is where most of the life is lost

I agree. Everyone's tank is unique and has different needs. Since I'm not an inventor, DIY'er or know much beyond what I've read, I have to pick a path to do down with blinders on. I would love to break down the paradigms in this hobby and think outside the box to come up with something great but that's not what I'm good at. Unfortunately I'm only a consumer in this hobby.

Cool, I never knew that the HQI ballasts were advanatgeous in that respect.

can eballasts not have starters built into them?

30mini
03/16/2007, 10:28 AM
Kurt, they may be able to, but would then need a higher constant voltage going through them, which would then in turn make them just like an HQI! E-ballasts run on the standard electricty running through being converted, and that's why they start the way that they do. Magnetics use a capacitor to store voltage for starts, and the HQI's use a cap and another ignitor that sends higher voltages to the bulb allowing it to use that voltage to get it fired, instead of using the internal starter.
