i am so gonna ask a newbie question here. the term frag gets thrown out way too much and i honestly have no clue what that means. what the hell is a frag?

are there a lot of aquarium shows around the country (specifically cincinnati or columbus)

I am guessing that the term "frag" is short for fragment. It's basically a way to propagate corals--cut off a piece, pass it along to the next person.

There is a frag swap in Cleveland in the spring and one in Columbus in the fall. I know there have been swaps in Cincinnati as well

The one in Cinci is October 20th at the Underground!

how does breaking off a piece of coral not hurt it????? what is the reason for doing this? lets say you break off a piece,,,does this "piece" grow bigger and bigger?

Yea, a frag of coral will grow bigger and bigger, and it's done to propagate the coral into a larger area. You will learn as you read more!

and, yes, it does hurt it, but it grows back and heals!

that just doesn't sound right!!:(

Trust me... it's okay! You will see that if done correctly, it doesn't hurt the coral at all, and the broken piece grows back, as well as where you broke it from. It's all good in the spreading of the hobby and the life of the coral!

it happens the same way in the wild as well.

Think of it as splitting a hosta plant, or any other perennial in the spring or fall....(though corals are animals, not plants) it'll be a little cranky for a few weeks, but the next thing you know, it's the same size it was before you split it up, and sometimes even healthier.
