If I turned an empty (no media) AC500 down to low, rumored to be 166gph, would it still be too much for a refugium on a 20high nano? I'd block off the return with plastic netting to hold in the macro and add a light.

What if I ground the impeller down so it would move water even slower? Would I still need power heads for movement?

I was wanting to do the exact same thing, so tell me how it goes! I think you should be fine if all you are going to use is macro algae and no sand. I was thinking of using some sort of compact flourescent to light mine

I use an AC500 on my 15G. It makes a good refugium and adds flow to the tank. I use a Rio 180 powerhead with mine. The rumor was started by Hagen and can be found in the AC booklet or from their website.
