Kurt03

Fusch13
01/25/2007, 01:53 PM

30mini
01/25/2007, 01:54 PM
Yea, if you can't get anything out of it, then just try to mod it like hell and see what you can do w/it!

30mini
01/25/2007, 01:57 PM
Point being?? We are bored man... what else can we do?

slovan
01/25/2007, 01:58 PM
How about you do some work to help drive productivity? :D

30mini
01/25/2007, 01:59 PM
I am doing that! But, I can't keep putting stuff to the shop b/c they are backed up into june already!

slovan
01/25/2007, 02:01 PM
Maybe you should get out in production and lend a helping hand?

30mini
01/25/2007, 02:02 PM
hahaha... I can run a lathe and a mill... but I would rather leave it in the hands of the 20 year vets!

slovan
01/25/2007, 02:03 PM
Nah...you're just lazy and would rather talk reef all day! I can't say that I blame you. :D

Kurt03
01/25/2007, 02:03 PM
then whos going to sit at his desk and watch his tank?

slovan
01/25/2007, 02:04 PM
Us. He could hook a webcam up to it so we can watch it, too. I don't see why he gets to have all the fun!

30mini
01/25/2007, 02:06 PM
You want me to hook up a webcam for it? It's pretty boring if I must say

slovan
01/25/2007, 02:09 PM
Well....someone's gotta watch your tank for ya while you're out there working! :D

30mini
01/25/2007, 02:11 PM
haha... I can probably set one up, I just need a USB extension cable, and it would have to be set up at an angle... but I could make it work

slovan
01/26/2007, 07:24 AM
Good morning! :D Where's everyone at?

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:06 AM
I'm here... had to get my paycheck :D
And bonus check

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:25 AM
So, I could get a Little Giant pump for $80. It's about 4 years old, but in good condition. You think I should offer $50 for it and see if he bites?

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:29 AM
Morning, why not all he'll say is no....and can 12 say lead chef, 12 and hour! Cachow!

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:32 AM
Your Lead Chef?? How the hell did you get that?

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:34 AM
5 yrs exp, and being american and not mexican!

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:35 AM
lol... I guess the ethnic background can make a difference! but, now you have to learn spanish!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:36 AM
nah, they have to know english to run line, if not they work in dish and prep!

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:37 AM
ahhh... well, even better! I'd take 12/hr for sure!! That's sweet!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:39 AM
yeah, and my nights working are mon, wed-fri...no weekends or tuesdays!

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:41 AM
Oh, now that's nice!! I'd take that in a heartbeat!!!

Lucky! It must be nice to get both! :D

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:42 AM
Yea... the bonus is only once a year... but still! That's an extra $368 I didn't have!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:43 AM

Nice! Not bad at all for a 2nd job!

slovan
01/26/2007, 08:45 AM
It's still nice to have though. Like you said, it's money you didn't have before. Does your wife know about your bonus? Or does this go into your tank piggy bank?

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:46 AM
yeah no doubt about that bonus there Chris...i second Sone's question!

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:46 AM
No, she knows about it... and it gets direct deposited to our bank account. We are going to pay off the rest we owe on our furniture that we bought when we got marrried

slovan
01/26/2007, 08:47 AM
DOH!!!!

slovan
01/26/2007, 08:48 AM
Oh well, that's one less bill you guys have to deal with and I'm sure that'll be nice to get off your back.

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:48 AM
Yea, really! That would have been a NICE addition the the piggy bank!! I had to take out $50 for cincyreef dues and a bucket of Reef Crystals... but I'm making another $20 from some zoas again on monday!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:52 AM
good deal!

slovan
01/26/2007, 08:52 AM
You see? You just have to tell the wife that your hobby is becoming self-sustaining. If you had a bigger tank, you'd have more corals to sell and it wouldn't cost you anything. It would actually make you money instead of losing.....Let me know how it goes!

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:53 AM
Yea... but I still have like $70 in my piggy bank as it is now! And, I have another $36 in my paypal account, so that's like $150 or so that I'll have in there by monday!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:54 AM
which is whos piggy bank? lol

Actually... I'm working on that now. What I'm going to do, is wait about a week or more, and write up a formal letter of request. I'll get some Flowers, make her dinner, clean the house, do the horizontal mambo, and ask her afterwards while her head is still in the clouds :smokin:

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 08:58 AM
i think she know something is coming..! lol

slovan
01/26/2007, 09:00 AM
Well if you're going to wait a week or more, you might as well wait until the 14th! :D Two birds with one stone.....

30mini
01/26/2007, 09:00 AM
Yea, she knows it's coming... but she doesn't know when! Next week, we are taking Friday off for "Sick days" and we are gonna go to the Aquarium, Eat lunch at the Fish Market next door, then go to the AMC and catch a movie... I may do it then, but I don't know

yeah, always try to knock down two things or more at once..lol

30mini

Yea... I already got her a Swatch for Valentines day... So, an added bonus won't hurt anything!

No problem man! Just trying to save a brotha some money! :D Why buy flowers twice in such a short time period? You can get her some on Valentine's Day and one on the day you bring home the tank!

30mini
01/26/2007, 09:09 AM
lol... that'll be in the far future... but still feasable!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 09:15 AM
nope it surely wont!

30mini
01/26/2007, 09:42 AM
Yea, so what's everyone got planned for the weekend? I'm looking for new tank spots again!

Fusch13
01/26/2007, 09:45 AM
im picking up the anthias if its still alive.....working on house, might swing by to get Ro water...and hopefully pick up 55!

30mini
01/26/2007, 09:48 AM
Yea, LMK when you wanna come by to get the RO. I have to make some for myself, so I'll be making it all day. I'll probably start tonight if you can get out and bring me the containers.

slovan
01/26/2007, 09:51 AM
I'm hoping to put in a new sump this weekend. :D I had Midwest Custom Aquariums build me one. It's probably one of the most overbuilt sumps you'll see but I like it.

30mini
01/26/2007, 09:53 AM
sweeet!! Pictures???

slovan
01/26/2007, 09:57 AM
No pictures yet. I just have the drawing in PDF. I'll get it into a jpg and post it for ya.

30mini
01/26/2007, 09:58 AM
nice... This is for your 210 right?

slovan
01/26/2007, 10:00 AM
Yeah, it's basically designed off of what I have today. It's just that my current one was built with 1/4" acrylic and seems flimsy. I would hate to come home someday and have a bunch of water on the floor because it didn't hold up. The sump was made by the guy I bought my tank from. It's by no means professional looking but looks better than what I would be able to do.

30mini
01/26/2007, 10:02 AM
Ahhh, I see!

slovan
01/26/2007, 10:10 AM
I added a few customizations to it as well. A probe holder with an extra hole to hold the water line for my calcium reactor to pull from.

The 1"x1" plate on the left side is where the effluent from the reactor will come back in the tank. It'll mix up with the rest of the sump so it won't have any effects on the readings on the probes since they're set far away as possible from each other.

Oh and the back is painted painted black.

30mini
01/26/2007, 10:12 AM
Nice drawing man!! You draw that? What program is it drawn on?

slovan
01/26/2007, 10:18 AM
Thanks but I didn't draw it. I had a buddy of mine do it for me since that's what he does for a living. It's done in Solid Edge.

30mini
01/26/2007, 10:18 AM
Good deal! I draw in Solid Edge too... LOVE the program!!!

slovan
01/26/2007, 10:26 AM
Yeah I it's nice to be able to draw things up quickly with it. Definitely nice to have the see-through 3D drawing of the sump, too.

I remember taking drafting in high school, it was a drawing board, T-square, triangles and templates! Talk about the old days!

30mini
01/26/2007, 10:34 AM
I still draw like that at home when I feel like it!

slovan
01/26/2007, 10:37 AM
The heck with that, it takes too much time! :D

30mini
01/26/2007, 10:46 AM
It's more fun that way... more of a challange

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 11:03 AM
have you tried google sketch up? It works pretty good and its free :)

this was made in sketch up

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i91/kurt03/150/150setupsumpinstand-10overflow.jpg

you can toggle several diffrent views with it too, didnt mess with that much though.

30mini
01/26/2007, 11:04 AM
i have google sketch up at home, and it's confusing to use... I havent really sat down and tried to figure it out, but I like Solid Edge better.

30mini
01/26/2007, 01:01 PM
Everyone still awake?

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 01:17 PM
its wierd compared to CAD and stuff like that. If you watch the intro for it or just part of it you will get it.

i think im awake, could be dreaming though

30mini
01/26/2007, 01:18 PM
haha... yea, I think I'm dreaming too!

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 03:17 PM
whats the danger levels of ammonia?
was wondering cause ive added some to the 150 and its at 1ppm now. was wondering if i put some rock from my 55 into the 150 it would harm the brittle stars and other stuff on them or if 1ppm was tolerable.

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 03:35 PM
this pro clear aquatics skimmer is pulling 5.66lpm and the css220 was pulling 2.36lpm

im going to let the pro clear aquatics skimmer run for a while and see what it collects. The pro clear is only venturi and doesnt chop bubbles with the impeller where the css220 is a nw pump so we will see the diffrence. I think the css220 will out perform it but only time will tell.

30mini
01/26/2007, 04:00 PM
Well, the ammonia will probably kill of more things than you want. I would let it go to be honest.

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 04:07 PM
yea, will wait till it drops more then add some more rock. I just thought i would be ok to add some ammonia since i had the rock from my sump in there. guess i added a little to much.

30mini
01/26/2007, 04:09 PM
Well... yea, you probably did add a little much... but at least you'll know you have a good amount of bacteria in there

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 04:22 PM
yup, it should go faster then usual since theres some rock in there from my 55's sump.

30mini
01/26/2007, 04:23 PM
Yea, it shouldn't take too long! What's the PH on your rock that you made? Come down any?

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 04:35 PM
doubt it, havent even bothered testing yet. I dont even test plugs till they have been soaking for around a month. my tap is off the scale so i have to lower it with vinegar then see if it goes up :)

30mini
01/26/2007, 04:36 PM
How long has your rock been soaking for?

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 04:37 PM
guess almost 2 weeks

30mini
01/26/2007, 04:38 PM
ahhh... so another 2 weeks, and then you check

Kurt03
01/26/2007, 05:04 PM
yup most likely. Hopefully i can make the rest of my rock this weekend too.

30mini
01/26/2007, 08:51 PM
Good deal man... let us know how it turns out! Oh yea... don't forget the pictures!!!

30mini
01/28/2007, 09:10 PM
Just so everyone knows... My grandpa died on saturday morning. I have a layout to go to on Monday night, and will not be at work on Tuesday b/c of the funeral. Thanks in advance for the condolences, but he is in a better place.

slovan
01/28/2007, 09:48 PM
Hey Chris, Sorry to hear about your grandpa. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

We'll hold the fort down for you. You can just read back a few pages just like I have to each week! :)

Kurt03
01/28/2007, 09:58 PM
sorry to hear that chris. my prayers are with you!

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 07:16 AM
Man, sorry to hear that Chris, its never good to lose someone in a family!

30mini
01/29/2007, 07:35 AM
Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. He had Alzheimers for the past 5 years, and then many more health complications on top of that, and finally a stroke this past week that just did him in. It was a long journey, but I believe that he is in a better place, and will truly rest in peace.

30mini
01/29/2007, 07:56 AM
Okay, I'll be here till about 4 today guys... so, I'm here!! We can still talk!
Ryan, my wife and I really liked the houses over off of Dee! They both have their good points, but then they both have the draw backs. We are going to go see them again this weekend and maybe bring my inlaws to have them take a look too and see what they think!

30mini
01/29/2007, 09:29 AM
Hello? Anyone home?

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 10:56 AM
Good deal man...well bucket brigade said the uv sterilizer is mine...so ill be adding that to my tank once i get it...! And the anthias looks good, hiding but good...taking advantage of all my caves! Need to get hime some buddies sometime!

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 10:57 AM
Were the house sizes more to mine?

30mini
01/29/2007, 10:58 AM
Yea, the one closer to the High School is more your size house, the one closer to you, the upstairs is smaller

slovan
01/29/2007, 11:09 AM
Good morning guys! Good to hear on your anthias and getting a UV Ryan. How many watts is the UV?

Sounds like your house hunting is going well Chris. Just be sure it has a large basement with plenty of "opportunities"! :D

30mini
01/29/2007, 11:11 AM
The UV is an 18watter that he is getting!
The basements have "opportunities" but we aren't planning on staying there for the next 30 years, so I'll have to wait on the big tank till we get the big house.

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 11:13 AM
ah, you can still do a big tank, youll find a wall...we can work on something there! Yeah its an 18w!

30mini
01/29/2007, 11:31 AM
I would love to do a big tank... and there is walls that I can do it on... it's just we aren't going to be living there for more than 5 or 10 years, so I wouldn't want to move a big tank!

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 11:36 AM
ah, moving it wouldnt be too awful, a few brute cans and we can do it!

30mini
01/29/2007, 11:39 AM
Yea, that's true. I may keep the 55 and turn that to the reef for the time being, keep the 20 for a frag tank, and use the 3rd BR for the "fishroom"

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 11:40 AM
yeah, given wife will let you, sounds like a plan!

30mini
01/29/2007, 11:41 AM
Yea... but now that I think about it... I want to use the stock tank as a sump, so I may put it in the basement, and build a stand for it, but not make it "in wall" but make it against the wall, and viewable from 2 sides. Have the plumbing go through the wall and back to where the washer/dryer would be. That would work too, b/c then it's just a hole that needs to be patched when I move it!

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 11:53 AM
Yeah a 2" whole isnt hard to patch..!

30mini
01/29/2007, 11:55 AM
Nope! But, it would probably be something more like 2 holes... but no bigger than 2" that's for sure!

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 11:57 AM
yeah but still, that isnt hard at all!

30mini
01/29/2007, 11:57 AM
Nope!!

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 11:59 AM
5-10 years is enough time for it to be worth the effort imo. maybe not a huge in wall but a 125 or 150 or something along that size would be nice. That way you can get everything worked out on how you want to do it for your dream tank.

30mini
01/29/2007, 12:03 PM
Ha... I think a bigger tank is out of the question until we get a house we are staying at for more than 10 years!

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 12:21 PM
so you planing on putting the 2x250watters over the 55 in the new house?

30mini
01/29/2007, 12:22 PM
yep!

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 12:34 PM
stock tank as the sump? is it a 100gal one?
have you looked at anything else for it? skimmer? i would look into the octopus skimmers if you havent. Same design as the euro reefs and everything else like them. The pumps are pretty damn good to after a little moding. could even mesh mod them to make them nuts!

sry for the questions, its pretty boring right now waiting for a class :/

30mini
01/29/2007, 12:37 PM
Yea, it's a 100 gal stock tank. I have been looking at the Octopus NW's for a skimmer. I think it will work well for my application. I may have something close to 200 gal's running in the whole system b/c I'll have the 40 gal as a fuge, and attach the 20 gal to the system too.

Rungeg
01/29/2007, 12:40 PM
What is you total water volume going to be?

30mini
01/29/2007, 12:43 PM
Well... let's count this up
55 gal display, 100 gal sump (more like 75 gal), 40 gal fuge (probably more like 30), 20 gal frag tank. I'd say somewhere around 180-200 gals depending on pipes and such.

Rungeg
01/29/2007, 12:48 PM
That will be pretty cool. A quick suggestion that I am sure you have already thought of, but when you fill your system turn it off to make sure tha tit doesn't overflow your sump.

30mini
01/29/2007, 12:49 PM
Yea, that's why I was saying more like 75 gals in the stock tank! I'm making room for if/when that does happen!

slovan
01/29/2007, 01:03 PM
Just drill a small hole on each return to break the siphon so only a minimal amount of water will drain into the sump.

30mini
01/29/2007, 01:05 PM
Yep, already got that in mind too :D

slovan
01/29/2007, 01:19 PM
Sounds good. Can't wait until you turn your 55 into a reef. Then you'll be out of room in a year and then you'll have to upgrade to a larger tank! :D

yea, your probably right Sone... but at least I'll have more money coming in b/c of the frags that will be produced from my 55!! That A. Plana I got from Allen is growing real fast and doing really well in my tank!!! So, that'll be one of my highest priced corals that I sell!!

slovan
01/29/2007, 01:26 PM
Baby steps...good idea! That way it won't shock your wife as much going from a 20 gallon to a 280! :D

30mini
01/29/2007, 01:36 PM
Yea... exactly my point!!

slovan
01/29/2007, 01:46 PM
I might've asked you this before but which corals did you get from me and how are they doing? I remember most of the corals bought between the three of you but forgot who actually has what.

30mini
01/29/2007, 01:48 PM
All of mine RTN'd on me about 3 days after... I HAD the tenius, ORA Green Birdsnest, another blue encrusting coral, and a green spongodes.

slovan
01/29/2007, 02:12 PM
Wow, that sucked. For some reason, I don't remember hearing about it. I might've had and forgot somehow. That's weird that all the corals would do that instead of just 1 or 2.

I don't have the tenuis any longer but still have all the others I think. I know I have the birdsnest and spongodes for sure. I'll give you frags of those next time you guys get something. Hopefully they'll stay alive this time! :)

30mini
01/29/2007, 02:13 PM
Yea, that was back when I had Walter!!
What happened to the Tenuis?? Lose it when you did your change?

slovan
01/29/2007, 02:19 PM
Dang that Walter! No seriously, I'm not sure what happened in your case. Oh well, just be ready to fit a few more pieces into your 55. :)

I sold the tenuis. I shouldn't have and kind of regret it now. I've been looking for another one but haven't found one with the colors like that one.

30mini
01/29/2007, 02:20 PM
WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? J/k
I'll be ready for those corals for sure man!! I just need to get the 55 changed over first!

slovan
01/29/2007, 02:27 PM
Umm....I wasn't? No, I was trying to thin out my "common" corals in favor of keeping only the LE/rare pieces and have them grow out in the tank without having to fight for space. I would be okay without it if I had more colonies. But since I still have some smaller pieces, I miss having it in the tank. Oh well, I can replace it if I really wanted to. I haven't looked all that hard for one either though. It's one of those nice pieces to have but wouldn't go out of your way to get one. Ya know what I mean? :)

30mini
01/29/2007, 02:33 PM
yea, I know what ya mean! I have some corals that I want to grow out in my tank... like the A. Plana, and the bright yellow acro w/purple tips, and whatever the white coral w/the blueish purplish tips I have. The others can wait... I have a green Birdsnest, a pink birdsnest, a cinnamon polyp mille, green digi, orange digi, purple cap, orange cap w/purple polyps, green cap, my clam, my zoas, the candy can that's splitting into 5 from 2, purple digi... can't think of what else right now... Oh yea... LOTR Paly's!!

30mini
01/29/2007, 02:47 PM
It is rated for 150 gals... you think it would be okay on my 55 set up when I get it set up??

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 02:47 PM
thats what im talking about....whats its tank capacity?

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 02:48 PM
yeah definently...thats what the regulator is for!

30mini
01/29/2007, 02:49 PM
I would still have to get the CO2 system and media though.

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 02:49 PM

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 02:51 PM
yeah but your still only looknig at maybe another 100 dollars, and if you can find a deal on a regulator, bubble counter and solenoid...even better!

01/29/2007, 02:52 PM
I already have a bubble counter! I just need the regulator, solenoid, and the tank!

What's a CO2 probe? I've never heard of it.

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 03:09 PM
i dont know, ive seen places where people have a calcium gauge, maybe its not a probe, but something to tell me daily what my level is at without test kits!

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:10 PM
That's an ORP probe Ryan

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 03:13 PM
you sure....i thought orp probes measured the level of o2 in system!

slovan
01/29/2007, 03:13 PM
There are calcium monitors but I've read that they're not very accurate. Probably true, otherwise I would have one! :D I've been kind of lazy to test lately. I used to do it all the time and I think that's what burnt me out on testing.

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 03:14 PM
yeah thats my thought i want a computer or machine to do it instead of me...lol call me lazy....

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:15 PM
Yea, your right... ORP is testing the amount of oxygen!
I wouldn't trust calcium monitors that much... they haven't been proven true yet!

slovan
01/29/2007, 03:16 PM
I'm kind of curious, how often do you guys check your parameters?

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:17 PM
as much as i can... basically whenever I get out to the LFS b/c I have no test kits at the moment!

Fusch13
01/29/2007, 03:18 PM
yeah when i run to a lfs, which isnt all the time...maybe every so months!

slovan
01/29/2007, 03:23 PM
I used to test every other week but that got old. I know I should test more than that and some do. But before last weekend, I haven't checked in over 3 months. I tested for alkalinity, calcium and magnesium. Everything was well within range so that was nice to see.

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 03:23 PM
INPOINT ORP Monitor™ will measure the ORP (oxidation-reduction potential, or REDOX)?
running ozone will raise this, also a skimmer that pulls alot out will raise this.

Heres your calcium monitor ryan :o $250 lol
http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=AM1121

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 03:26 PM
oh and about testing, ive been testing every week trying to get my topoff just right. When you have everything dialed in just right you can test less often and be fine. Especially when using a calcium reactor thats been consistent for a month or so.

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:27 PM
Yea, when I get my calcium reator, it'll probably have to wait a while till I get the regulator, tank, and media.

slovan
01/29/2007, 03:39 PM
Hey Chris,
Are you dosing two-part or kalk right now?

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:40 PM
two part... probably going to start limewater soon though.

slovan
01/29/2007, 03:46 PM
You could get away with dosing kalk only instead of using a calcium reactor. I doubt you would ever need one for a 55. But then again, with the deal you're getting, it might be worth it.

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:48 PM
well, I would have the 55, plus the 20 together on one system! I would have a lot of SPS in there!

slovan
01/29/2007, 03:57 PM
You should check into getting one of these. (http://www.championlighting.com/product.php?productid=21382&cat=530&page=1) :) It's works on the same principal as the Deltecs but just a few hundred dollars cheaper. :D

30mini
01/29/2007, 03:59 PM
Why would I need that?? I'll be topping off with kalk water

slovan
01/29/2007, 04:07 PM
That's what it is.

30mini
01/29/2007, 04:09 PM
hmmm... well then... i may have to look into it!!

slovan
01/29/2007, 04:13 PM
I would. It's a lot better than dosing two-part. That stuff gets old after awhile. Some people don't mind doing it everyday because they consider it part of their daily chores. I just don't have time for it and I got sick of doing it.

This is a pretty crazy hobby, so many ways to do things!

30mini
01/29/2007, 04:15 PM
Right... So, if I have the calcium reactor on my system, and the Kalk reactor, in theory, this should keep the alk and calc. at stable levels?

slovan
01/29/2007, 04:26 PM
Ideally or ultimately, yes. That's what you would like to have. Your calcium reactor will lower your ph and your limewater will kick it back up. A lot of people run limewater after their photoperiod to help keep the ph stable.

Personally I think limewater would be the best place to start. If your system demands more than what you can dose for limewater, then you should get a calcium reactor. I think you're still a long way from that though. But you should do what you think is best for your system. No one knows it better than yourself. I just wanted to give you an outsider's point of view. :)

30mini
01/29/2007, 04:29 PM
Thanks Sone!! I appreciate it. I think that my corals/clam are using the calcium like crazy in my tank. They have all grown a lot, and with me dosing almost 2 times a week, and the calc. staying at ~440, I think I'm good!

slovan
01/29/2007, 04:32 PM
That's cool. I don't think you're using that much then if you're only dosing twice a week. Wait until you have to start dosing it everyday, then it will get old.

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 08:12 PM
my tank is crammed with alot of corals and kalkwasser topoff still keeps my alk up. the only thing i dont like about using it in topoff is that my evap isnt consistent so sometimes it adds more alk and sometimes less. if i got a doser i could keep my numbers rock solid like a calcium rector. i think they stay pretty close though just using it in topoff once you get it mixed right..

slovan
01/29/2007, 08:55 PM
You're right Kurt, the only way to control that is using something like a Tunze osmolator or some other liquid level controller.

It's easier and more forgiving since I have more water volume. My evaporation doesn't fluctuate too much at all. Basically just the transition between seasons so I don't find it too hard to adjust. Nothing I check for weekly, maybe just a quick eyeball check every once in awhile.

Just a quick question for ya, why does your evaporation fluctuate so much?

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 09:01 PM
its prob not that much really, prob more me adding more corals and/or corals are getting settled and growing faster :) and a new tank taking off in coraline. Its everywhere! seems to really be spreading faster lately.
I do think im evaping more water then i was in the summer, i think its cause of the heater sucking moister out of the air? or it could be my imagination, i havent marked down how much topoff ive been using so idk for sure.

slovan
01/29/2007, 09:17 PM
I think I've noticed the same thing. My dehumidifier is set to 50% humidity and I haven't heard it kick on in a long time. Usually in the summertime, it runs more often than not throughout the day. That's with the AC on all summer long!

Kurt03
01/29/2007, 09:23 PM
hmm does AC put moisture in the air or just remove less of it? I have a window ac in my room with the tank that runs all summer. So my room is VERY consistent all summer, but changes alot in the fall/winter/spring depending on the weather.

slovan
01/29/2007, 09:33 PM
I think there's more humidity present in the air and the AC cannot remove it efficiently? Heck, I don'd know. I wish I knew more about HVAC but I don't.

ok, riddle me this guys, im getting that 2 mo old uv sterilizer, but my question is, do i need a small pump to drive water through it? My thoughts are yes.....

slovan
01/30/2007, 01:47 PM
Yes you do. Not unless your return pump is strong enough that you can tee off of it to power your UV as well. What's the purpose of the UV? Water clarity or to kill bacteria?

slovan
01/30/2007, 01:50 PM
That kind of reminds me, I got my new sump and put it in last weekend. So much better than the old one. Anyway if you look in the third pic, I use a feed pump for the UV that I have.

kill bacteria, water clarity is good.....just want that added protection againts bacteria and diseases.....nice sump, Sone.....well, i have a mag 2 pushing water through my Phosban, wonder if i could tee off that and use it....my return pump is a mag 18....i have some serious flow in my tank.....around 85-90x

slovan
01/30/2007, 02:07 PM
Sounds like you have a really high turnover rate in your sump! :eek2: Personally I'd tee off that Mag 18 and feed your UV with it and get some more flow inside your display. There's a lot of options out now with all the new high-flow powerheads out.

I don't think the Mag 2 will even do anything to really matter for your UV. You should see what the recommended flow rate for your UV is if you're trying to kill bacteria.

Fusch13
01/30/2007, 02:10 PM
ok, ill check into it when i get it, its a turbotwist 18w! getting it for 60 dollars, 2 mos old! pretty good deal, being new they are 130 or so!

slovan
01/30/2007, 02:17 PM
I just checked Dr. Fosters, it says 200-300gph. I'm assuming 200gph is to kill bacteria and 300gph is for water clarification.

Fusch13
