hey guys new to the forum! i have a 125g tank that i got pretty cheap from a buddy of mine whos moving. although its dirtier than all heck. i dont plan on setting it up anytime this year, so i was wondering if it was ok to clean it up with some cleaners. that shouldnt do any damage like a year or so later when i finally have a place to set it up will it? i cant just use water to clean it all up.

Was it a saltwater tank? Did he ever use copper in it?
If is encrusted with salt and calcium you can clean it with Muriatic acid mixed 10 parts water to 1 part acid. add the acid to the water.

After that is done and all rinsed out you can then use bleach and water. Again rinse it out well with fresh water and you are good to go.

welcome!

Why so long till start up?

If $$ is part of the issue ... look into buying LR from people who are going our of the hobby, or are moving .. breaking down their tank ... you can score LR for $1 - $3 /lbs ... sometimes even free. and you usually get some decent freebees with it.

Get a razor wallpaper scraper from the hardware store. Wet the glass and scrape away. Stay away from the silicone. Much easier than the acid but does not work well on overflows.
