Ok so I am in the beginning of setting up a little pico tank and I have the water and live rock in there as of 2 days ago. I am using a hob filter for the water flow and refuge. I'm using uncured rock and I was wondering if I could/should use a filter pad in the filter while I am curing/scrubbing/cleaning the rock so that it will catch all the garbage that comes off of the rock, or should I just let it float in the tank and do its own thing?

I would use a filter pad.

I heard that using a filter pad in a saltwater tank is a big no-no. Is this still the case for me or is it ok to use the pad for now and get rid of it after the cycle or when should I get rid of it?

filter pad is fine. Just replace it often.

I have had my 2.5 gallon pico up and running for about 3 months. I have a hob filter using a sponge filter. And I think that works the best. At first you might want to use a carbon filter but then I would go with the sponge.

yeah I use stuffing for pillows whenever i clean my tank and just shove it in the filter and then tank it out after a day, just dont leave it in dirty
